I'm almost done with the girl quilt. Here's the latest picture.
Instead of connecting each small square blocks of blue and pink by rows and columns, I opted for the 4-patch blocks which measured 8.5". Refer to the previous blog post for the pictures. I arranged all small squares on the design wall. When I'm happy with the arrangement, I then grouped them by 4 to make a 4-patch block. It's very liberating to me to be able to sew without having to draw a diagonal line or using lot of pins. The project moves along a lot quicker and less stress. After trimming the 4-patch blocks to a uniform size of 8.5", connecting them together is a breeze. Right now I'm auditioning the border and binding fabric. After that I'll work on the boy quilt.
One secret tip: using a scant 1/4" seam allowance is a big help. I used it to piece the blue and pink strips together and in piecing the 4-patch blocks. None of the block had a variant bigger than 1/4" and I'm very happy to live with that. At the end, the blocks came together beautifully!
Thanks for stopping by and have a great creating time.

Love your baby quilt, Margo. I just made one of pinks with purples. My units are 6". This design always makes me think 'buttons and bows' .
ReplyDeleteOh the pinks are so pretty! Love the border you've chosen. I want to make this pattern as soon as I can, it looks like fun.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw your last post with the blues and oranges, I loved it so much I started a folder with the pattern from Jordan fabrics along with a photo of your blue/orange block. I just added your secret tip to my notes. :)
When I found the pattern on Jordan website, I was amazed at all the free patterns, and they are pretty ones! I started watching Donna Jordan's tutorial and glanced at the comments and was sad to realize she passed away this year.
That is a really sweet baby quilt. Great layout!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt top is beautiful, love this mix of pink and blue. And great project coming along quickly, it's nice to have a way to speed up the process.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your secret tip and linking up!
It looks great. The blocks are some that I've not seen before.
ReplyDeleteVery nice, I don't remember ever seeing that pattern before.
ReplyDeleteLovely blocks make for a lovely top!

Hi Margo, I'm glad that you found an easier way to put these blocks together. Using a scant 1/4" can be a real life saver. Thanks for sharing that with us on FM Mavericks.
